Everyone has butterflies on the first day of school. Foster kids have helicopters.
Many of our customers are just like us -- we are people who rarely find a safe place to eat outside of our homes. Our business is in feeding those people regardless of their situation. Our "Food for Thought" started as an extensive donation program, and once we opened the store, we started daily food bank pick ups. Now, as we enter our second year as a public bakery, we think our customers are the kind of people who want to further this giving back initiative. So we ask you, will you join us?
One way is throughout the month of August, we'll ask customers to help support foster children. You can help in many ways, including adding a $3 donation at purchase, bringing in back-to-school supplies or donating directly at this link, each way will impact the hundreds of children in foster care in Seattle. The first day of school can be a daunting for many children, but for a foster child it can be terrifying.
So Why Not Help Them Out a Bit, eh? Follow This Link
We can make a foster child's first day of school a much more pleasant experience by simply providing them with the resources needed to buy clothes, backpacks, sweet gel pens, and other necessities that help kids feel confident and do well in school. The proceeds could also support youth who want to learn an instrument, to be a part of a team, or join other extracurriculars that no child should be left out of simply because they cannot afford it.
How Did Nuflours Come Up with This Amazing Idea?
The simple answer, we did not. We are partnering with one of our most treasured Seattle non-profits, Treehouse, which is an organization that was founded by a group of local social workers who saw how deprived many foster children were. Today, their goal is to help King County foster kids graduate at the same rate as their schoolmates. It is a worthy endeavor, and a difficult task, so we decided to help.
